Edge Systems Engineer
We ship AI that understands what’s happening on factory lines. We’re hiring a Factory Systems Engineer to turn that capability into a rock-solid, shippable product: an industrial “Matta Box” that ingests high-bandwidth video, processes it locally, and syncs with the cloud. You’ll design, build, optimise and productise our edge compute and machine vision pipeline and hardware, keeping thousands of deployed units patched and humming along.
One week, you might be figuring out how to best mount our cameras in the majority of factories; the next, you’re optimising the frame acquisition code running on our Matta boxes. We’d love for you to live and breathe productising and optimising the Matta solution that gets deployed to customer sites – everything from packaging to lighting, mounting, cameras, boxes, and the code that ties it all together.
This means you’ll work with everyone across the team – from AI researchers to Forward Deployed Engineers – making sure our systems run like clockwork.
In this role, you’ll help us:
- build the framework that lets us unlock even more powerful AI capabilities
- speed up deployment time on site, leading to less factory downtime and disruption
- enable customers to self-serve our solutions (we are super excited about this!)
- eliminate potential issues and errors before they happen
- deliver bullet-proof OTA updates to enable our best features to roll out seamlessly
This isn’t a role with a playbook – you’ll shape how we productise today’s solutions so we can scale our impact across Europe and the US. And this isn’t your typical gig - expect to work hard and collaborate with an exceptional team of top engineers, scientists, and builders, all obsessed with embodied AI reshaping the manufacturing world.
About you
- A multi-disciplinary solutions / embedded systems engineer (you likely don’t fit into any one box), with a strong grasp of both hardware (Raspberry Pi / Nvidia Jetson / Camera Optics are bonuses) and software (Linux, Gstreamer, Mender, Over-the-air updates)
- You’ve done this before. We’re looking for someone who’s designed end-to-end solutions from scratch, navigated plenty of hurdles, and shipped brilliant products (in startups? even better)
- A practical problem-solver: things won’t work! Your success will hinge on how well you manage unpredictability and moving parts – both on the customer side and within the evolving development of our AI models
- Highly collaborative: you love working in teams, sharing knowledge, mentoring/teaching others, and embracing feedback (and yes, you’re always game for a team Lego-building break)
- You’ve got a Master’s or PhD in Integrated Systems (or similar), or solid experience building embedded solutions
- Bonus extras: machine-vision experience - illumination, optics, sensors, exposure tuning. PoE camera networks or similar high-throughput, low-latency wiring schemes. OTA/CI-CD experience (Mender, Azure Device Update, or AWS IoT Jobs). Gnarly Linux package understanding and at home in horrendous Makefile compilations.
Above all, we are looking to build a team of creative, outside-of-the-box thinking problem solvers. For this, candidates should be:
- Capable of setting and reaching ambitious goals, and taking a project from concept to completion.
- Self-directed, self-organised, proactive, and comfortable in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary work environment.
- Team players with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Enthusiastic tea or coffee drinkers who enjoy a good biscuit or two and a good slice of cake (this is the most important criteria).
What will impress us
- Being proactive. Building or sending us example interfaces and projects – even better if related to the role.
- Whether you’re a chess grandmaster, a world champion at tiddlywinks, or a badass musician, we’d love to see the hobbies, skills, or activities you take to the next level - we’re always impressed by those who go all in!
- Clear passion in our mission, not a random reason to work with us.
